Lexus Reinforces Its Commitment To Hybrid Technology
Back in 2007 when Lexus first introduced the GS 450h, it was the very first luxury sport sedan entering the hybrid market. Now, in 2011, the 450h is the premier sporty sedan equipped with an Atkinson V6 engine that incorporates cycle gas engine along with two hybrid motors in this front-engine, rear-wheel drive high performance selection. Also, the 2013 hybrid version of the GS 350 incorporates many enhanced improvements to the hybrid powertrain utilizing the Lexus second generation Hybrid Drive system. The 450h makers are aiming at considerable fuel consumption reductions while maintaining the Lexus reputation for producing top-quality driving performance.
Acceleration is Effortless
The GS 450h will go from 0-60 quite effortlessly within 5.6 seconds powered by an output of 338 horsepower. Although speed is evident, fuel consumption still draws an expectation for a 30 percent reduction. A goal has been set toward obtaining certification designating the GS 450h as a SULEV II, Super-Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II. Also available in the new hybrid GS is a drive mode selector that allows for users to choose a specific driving experience using four modes – EV, Sport S+, Sport S or Eco. According to Mark Templin, V.P. And General Manager for Lexus U.S. Operations, the brand new GS 450h is designed to provide users with the most exciting, high performance driving experience put out by an innovative hybrid package. The 450h is a good example of the company's ability to master the hybrid luxury market with superb exterior styling, comfortably luscious interior appointments and put to use the latest in advanced automotive technology.
Versatile GS 450h Provides Operating Options
All Lexus hybrid vehicles, including the new GS 450h, are fully hybrid. This gives users the opportunity to select operation in either electric-only or gas-only modes while also having the choice for operating in a combo mode. Users will note the Hybrid Drive system runs exceptionally smoothly. Furthermore, the V6 3.5 Atkinson engine is expertly matched with the water-cooled, high-output yet compact magnet electric motor. These two separate power sources can either drive the rear wheels together or independently. Also on board along with the gas and electric motors is the 450h's hybrid drive system generator, a top-performing nickel-metal battery and a power-splitting device that can re-allocate power from the gas engine, the electric motor and generator directing where power is needed according to vehicle operations. This Atkinson cycle engine has been specifically adapted for use with the Lexus hybrid powertrain – a milestone first where premium, luxury sedans are concerned. Benefits include optimizing fuel efficiency. This is accomplished since the Atkinson Cycle engine delays compression forcing the valves to close later. A high expansion ratio is created causing less compression leading to reduced energy loss. Combustion energy is more effectively converted to engine power.
